Expect the unexpected with these “out of the box” art encounters for young artists ages 6-16.
Occurring once a month in the newly remodeled Glab Family Art Studio, smART Saturdays offer a fun opportunity to connect with your child through flexible open-ended art projects designed to encourage creativity and thinking outside the box. Instruction and project guidelines will be provided, but individual expression is encouraged. Instructors: Amethyst Barron & Caitlin Donald
Spring/Summer 2018 Class Schedule:
April 21st – Buggy Bouquets
Celebrate April flowers and the Birthday of Iowan artist Grant Wood by creating your very own “Lilies of the Alley” using a wide variety of provided material options. Children and their adult caregivers will construct a vase “arrangement” of paper flowers, butterflies, caterpillars, bugs, or whatever makes you think of Spring!
May 5th – Pet Rocks
Participants and their caretakers will paint and decorate rocks using a variety of interesting materials, with emphasis on giving their creations a personal flair. “Adoption cards” will be provided to engage creative story-telling by naming and describing what makes their pet unique.
June 16th – Time Capsules
Join in the long tradition of creating a time-capsule to preserve memories for the future. Young artists will be provided with a container to decorate and fill with small objects that they create, each representing a thought, insight, or feeling relevant to their current selves.
July 14 – Mini-boats
Celebrate Summer weather by creating mini-boats that actually float! A variety of techniques will be demonstrated on how to make fun, water-resistant creations that participants can test-run in a small tub of water. How well can you make your boat float?
No smART Saturday in August
